Sunday, November 8th, 2009

Iowa quarterback Ricky Stanzi was taken to the locker room after a hard hit in the second quarter. He has injured his ankle and will be sidelined. A local Iowa radio network reported that Stanzi suffered a high ankle sprain.
Stanzi was drilled by Corey Wootton in the end zone, and his fumble was recovered by Marshall Thomas for a touchdown that brought Northwestern within 10-7. As a result Stanzi was limping as he was helped off the field.
He has been replaced by freshman James Vandenberg. We wish Stanzi a quick recovery.

On Monday George Kokinis the general manager of the Cleveland Browns was escorted out of the teams facility. It is rumored that the escort out was the result of being fired.  Kokinis was brought in to help the team after the Browns had hired Mangini, who coached last year with the New York Jets.

The Cleveland Browns has struggled in all aspects of the game and fell to 1-7 with a 30-6 loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday. Lerner said Sunday night he is “sick” about the state of his NFL team but he will not make a coaching change.   Lerner did tell the Plain Dealer and Akron Beacon-Journal on Sunday that he would not fire Mangini during the club’s bye week. Lerner did say he would like to bring in a “strong, credible, serious leader” to help run his team.
Mangini believes his process for turning around the team will work despite a horrid first half of the season.

University of Michigan is still under investigation

Monday, October 26th, 2009

On Monday the University of Michigan’s President Mary Sue Coleman that the NCAA has given the school a notice of inquiry.  This inquiry symbolizes the start of an investigation.  The common practice is for the enforcement staff of the NCAA to look in to allegations, and send a letter of inquiry only when a violation may have occurred.
The NCAA investigation took place after The University of Michigan started looking into allegations brought against Rich Rodriguez’s program in August after a report in the Detroit Free Press cited anonymous players claiming the amount of time they spent during the season and in the offseason exceeded NCAA limits.

“As I said at the onset of this review, we place the highest importance on the well-being of our student-athletes and the integrity of our program,” Coleman said in a statement. “We continue to work with the NCAA to ensure that a thorough and objective investigation occurs.”  Everyone will have to wait to see the outcome

Go Dolphins!

What a night for the Miami Dolphins and coach Tony Sparano.  Last night game against the Jets brings them to a 2-3 record for the season.

Running back Ronnie Brown took the snap with 10 seconds left and scored on a 2-yard keeper for the fifth lead change of the final period, giving Miami a wild 31-27 victory over the Jets on Monday night.

Newcomer Braylon Edwards Braylon  provided a big boost for the Jets, and two fake punts fooled the Dolphins. But Miami gained 110 yards with the wildcat, which was instrumental in three touchdown drives, including the last one.

“Like anything else, if you execute, good things will happen,” Brown said.

Jets coach Rex Ryan was annoyed the wildcat kept working.

“I used to see all those gimmicks when I was coaching back in college,” Ryan said. “I’ve been a part of some bad performances before on defense, just not this bad.”

The Jets and Dolphins put on an offensive show in the final quarter as the lead changed hands several times.

The Dolphins started from their own 30-yard line with 5:05 left, trailing 27-24, and mounted a 13-play drive for the winning score. The march included four wildcat plays for 25 yards, the last on third down at the 2.

“We were in the huddle and said, ‘We’ve got to score a touchdown. No settling for field goals. We’ve got to finish the game,’” Brown said.

He ran up the middle, found a seam and crossed the goal line with 6 seconds to go. Even Brown’s teammates on the sideline were surprised by the call.

Chad Henne threw both of his TD passes on play action, including the 53-yarder to Ted Ginn Jr. when he scored with four defenders chasing him into the end zone. He had a perfect passer rating on play-action passes.

“That’s why we are players and not coaches,” Miami defensive tackle Jason Ferguson said. “All of us were talking about, ‘Why won’t you pass it?’ Because we got a touchdown, that’s why.”

The resilient Dolphins (2-3) came from behind three times in the fourth quarter, and they’re back in the AFC East race after losing their first three games. The Jets (3-2) have lost two straight and fell into a tie with New England for first place.

The Cleveland Browns has recently traded Braylon Edwards to the NY Jets.  I wonder if this has anything to do with Braylon getting into a fight with Lebron James best friend Edward Givens who is a club promoter.  Rumor has it that Edwards have been seen out and about drinking and partying excessively.  Maybe this was the last straw.  Nonetheless, we wish Braylon luck with all future endeavors.

The New England Patriots recently traded DL Richard Seymour to the Oakland Raiders.  This move poses a huge risk for the Raiders.  The Raiders do not qualify for the first-round pick in 2011 because of the trade.   Seymour who turns 30 next month will receive $3.685 million for the season.

Richard Seymour Traded To Raiders“It shows the commitment of this organization,” defensive end Greg Ellis said. “You can’t guarantee we’re going to have a great, great season this year. But the commitment is definitely there so players don’t have to question that when you’re making those kinds of moves to make something happen and hopefully win right now.”

Seymour was drafted sixth overall in 2001. He played on three Super Bowl winners with the Patriots, recording 39 career sacks and being selected to the Pro Bowl for five straight seasons beginning in 2002.  I believe they made a great decision.  Sometimes you have to take risks.  We wish them luck with the upcoming season

Michael Vicks Ruling

The Eagles are expecting NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to issue a rulling on Michael Vick’s possible full reinstatement by Saturday.  The leagues mandatory cutdown to a 53 player roster deadline is approaching.  This factor will play a huge role in their final roster.

In July Vick was placed under a conditional reinstatement.  The condition of the reinstatement stated that Vick was unable to play in regular games until notified by Goodell.  Team president Joe Banner has been in contact on a weekly basis with Goodell.  They are at least hoping for a better understanding of when the full reinstatement will take place.  The decision will be based on his progress and behavior. We wish Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles luck with the upcoming season.
