1972 Dolphins Perfect Season
Earl Morrall Autographed / Signed 8x10 Photo
"Old Bones" played 23 seasons in the NFL, the last five with the Miami Dolphins, en route to participating in 255 games. Morrall came off the bench in the fifth game of the 1972 season after Bob Griese suffered a broken right leg and completed eight of 10 passes with two touchdowns in a 24-10 victory over San Diego. In one of the greatest back-up performances in sports history, Morrall guided the Dolphins to nine more regular season victories and a win in the AFC Semifinal Game, before Griese returned to action in the AFC Championship Game. He was named AFC Player of the Year by the Sporting News, AFC Best Passer by the Players Association, and earned the Comeback Player of the Year honor by Pro Football Weekly. For the 1972 season, he completed 83 of 150 passes (55.3) for 1,360 yards, 11 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, and ran the ball 17 times for 67 yards (3.9) and one touchdown (a 31-yard scamper against the New York Jets). Morrall started his career in 1956 with the San Francisco 49ers as a punter, kicking 45 times for 1,705 yards (37.9). He relieved an injured John Unitas in Super Bowl V and completed seven of 15 passes for 147 yards in the Colts 16-13 victory over Dallas.
